Ubuntu

Ubuntu

Typhoons have adopted ‘Ubuntu’ as a central theme across the club to use in all aspects of club life and really bring the Typhoons’ community together. Ubuntu is an African ethic or ideology focussed on the concept of humanity. A loose translation is “I am, because we are”.

It has been adopted by sports teams in the past, most famously by the Boston Celtics, who built a new squad around the concept of Ubuntu to help them reach the franchise’s goal of winning their 17th NBA crown. Their coach, Doc Rivers, explains it briefly in this video, and in episode 1 of The Playbook, on Netflix.

We’ve all had an unpredictable 2020 and 2021. The pandemic has impacted the rugby community in HK, both individually and as clubs. There has been a big upheaval in terms of playing strength across all clubs, and we have not completed a full season for two years now. We have been very fortunate to welcome a large number of new players to the club, and are now at the start of an exciting new chapter with our new women’s team.

In the history of our club, whether we have had one, two, three or now four teams, we have always had a focus on being a club with one heart. We feel Ubuntu captures and highlights the special culture the club has, and makes it clear why we want to continue to cultivate and developer this over the coming, exciting years for the Typhoons
